-
Yes, you need to have a master’s level graduate degree in mental health. And yes, you need to have a license in mental health. Meaning you can graduate with your master’s degree and be provisionally licensed (that’s still considered licensed), working towards your full licensure. So as long as you have graduated and have a license (provisional counts), you can get your ICST credential.

Only those hours taught by an ICST-P qualify towards the ICST credential.

While we acknowledge that the presence of many sandtray trainers around the world, only those trained by IAST Approved Providers are eligible to receive the sandtray credential.

The IAST seeks to ensure that those credentialed have a complete understanding of the history and basics of sandtray therapy as well as more advanced skills of the power of sandtray through the lens of the neuroscience. IAST also recognizes that case consulation is important as well as the experiential nature of the sandtray trainings. The current standards for the IAST credentials are considered to be both in depth while remaining doable for most therapists throughout the world.

While both type of sand work use sand, miniatures, and sand trays, the way in which the tray is processed by the therapist is different for each. Sandplay therapy adheres to the Jungian way of seeing healing as developed by Dora Kalff. Sandtray therapy is open to incorporating differing theoretical orientation and allows for more direct processing of trays.
